According to the State University Law (Landeshochschulgesetz), it is the university's responsibility to enforce the equality of opportunity principle for men and women. The Equal Opportunities Officer and her substitutes support the university in doing so by helping eliminate disadvantages of women and female students working in science.
Different interests of men and women have led to less female students studying technical or engineering subjects and less women working in science.
The Equal Opportunities Officer is elected by the Senate for 2 years and annually reports to it about her work. The equal opportunities plan lists the legal provisions within which equal opportunities officers work.

takes care of the interests of female academics.
introduces measures to improve family-friendliness of the university.

Juggling studies or work and family still represents a daily challenge. The university is seeking possibilities to support its members in this challenge and become more "family-friendly".
One important step was the establishment of a Childcare facility for members of scientific staff at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences together with ReHa Südwest. In the summer of 2008, the day nursery "Zauberland" on Bismarckstr. 45 was opened followed by the day-care center "Villa im Zaubergarten" on Kaiserallee. Both facilities offer up to 20 placements for children of university members.
