At the core of SCON lies a one-year student exchange programme between RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia, and Hochschule Karlsruhe (HsKA). Students participating in the study center will absolve one semester at their home university and one at the partner university, working on research projects in the novel and exciting fields of Optofluidics and Nanophotonics.

Both, Optofluidics and Nanophotonics are research fields that study systems on the nanometer length scale. Optofluidics is a technology that combines fluidics and optics at the nanoscale, which leads to unprecedented control of light and fluids. Nanophotonics is the study of light interacting with structures or particles on the nanometer length scale. Through interaction of light with structures of different shape and size, the effects can be greatly altered. 

Application areas for Optofluidics as well as Nanophotonics are:
• renewable energy
• medical devices
• biomedical sensors
• optical sensors
• environmental monitoring
• and many many more

The research projects are conducted in a state-of-the-art environment in the labs of the Institute for Optofluidics and Nanophotonics (IONAS) at HsKA and the MicroNano Research Facility (MNRF) at RMIT University.

To avoid a language barrier, the language universally used in the laboratories is English. To better improve communication, students have the opportunity to participate in language courses at both institutions. If you are a student at RMIT or HsKA, are interested in Optofluidics and Nanophotonics or want to know more about it and its applications, and you can imagine going abroad for one semester, we would be glad to hear from you.
