Institute for Digital Materials Science

The Institut für Digitale Materialforschung IDM (Institute for Digital Materials Science) focuses on the development of new modelling and simulation techniques for applications to computational materials science and for optimization of production technology concepts. Topics of consideration are multiscale materials modelling, the derivation of microstructure and mechanical property correlations and the simulation of microstructure formation, phase transformations in multiphase systems, polycrystalline grain structures, heat and mass diffusion of multiple components, fluid flow and elasticity. The aim is to develop time- and cost-saving, highly efficient simulations methods, to computationally design new materials, to improve material properties, to optimize and control manufacturing processes.

Within the research work, we intensively network with national and international partners, both from industry and research institutes. Since many years, a very close collaboration is conducted with several institutes of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Besides other joint research work, we particularly cooperate within two major research projects: The recently funded Research Training Group (Graduiertenkolleg 1483) of the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) and a center of excellence on Computational Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE) sponsored by the Landesstiftung Baden-Württemberg.
