Mobility is a major topic in the present and future, combining many areas including computer science. Starting with the basic task of moving individuals from one place to another, mobility develops into a complex system of interacting vehicles, vehicle systems, goods, people and information. Ubiquitous mobility systems enable flexible, intelligent Systems of Systems to support mobility in all situations as best as possible and to combine new services and technologies into a "mobility experience" for mobile customers.
The Institute of Ubiquitous Mobility Systems (IUMS) carries out research in the field of mobility systems, especially at the interface between interactions and models in ubiquitous systems. The expertise is therefore found in omnipresent, distributed systems (ubiquitous computing), in Human- Computer Interaction (HCI) and usability of ubiquitous systems as well as in the modelling of complex systems and processes for adaptive systems.
Since 2015 Prof. Thomas Schlegel has been Director of the Institute of Ubiquitous Mobility Systems, holding the endowed professorship for "Public Transportation". From 2010 to 2015 he was an Assistant Professor of "Software Engineering of Ubiquitous Systems" (SEUS) at the Faculty of Computer Science at the Technische Universität Dresden.

Since the beginning of 2017, the new research Laboratory for Ubiquitous Mobility Systems has been in use. It is equipped to a high standard of technology and is available for current and future research projects.
New interaction technologies? From 98''-4k-Touch-Display (ShadowSense), MS Hub/Kinect/Pixelsense/HoloLens, HTC Vive, Project Tango, display wall to projection screen - new interaction technologies as well as AR technologies are available.
See what your users are seeing? State-of-the-art mobile and stationary eye tracking equipment, 360° field camera system with 16 UHD cameras for usability engineering and evaluation completed by prototyping with 3D printing, context-based sensor systems and embedded system development.
Test Field for Autonomous Driving
The IUMS is a member of a consortium that will establish and use the Digital Test Field Baden-Württemberg for networked and automated driving. The test field enables the participating companies and research institutes to develop and test technologies in the area of autonomous driving in road traffic.
Algorithmic media select information for media users. The project AlgStrOeff evaluates how the use of algorithmic selection mechanisms affects users' political information competency. For this purpose, the IUMS develops a survey-environment embedded in digital media in order to automate media research and make processes of opinion forming comprehensible.
The purpose of "GO Karlsruhe!" is to increase the knowledge of the demands and challenges of pedestrian traffic, the valuation of infrastructure and the development of measures for improvement. In order to conduct this research, digital participatory instruments are designed and evaluated. These instruments enable the pedestrians to be involved on-site and continuously in the analysis, design and implementation of the field test.
The goal of the project “CyProAssist“ is the creation of a production assistance system and its application under real production conditions. This system focuses on humans as the key problem solvers in the production process. For this purpose, the IUMS is developing new semantic models for human-machine interaction and (context) adaptation.
