The University Council (Hochschulrat) as the third governing body besides the Senate and the Rectorate was legally introduced for universities of applied sciences in 2000. From the very beginning, Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences has relied on the important impulses that personalities from science and industry can bring to bear on the strategic development of the university. In this way, Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences has virtually assumed a model function for all universities in Baden-Württemberg. In the current version of the State Higher Education Act, the model with an exclusively externally appointed university council has now become the standard case.
In its constituent meeting at the beginning of November, the University Council met for the first time after the appointment of its members by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts. The following members are new to the body and will help shape the development of the university until August 2025: Ms. Corona Feederle, Managing Partner of the feco Group, Mr. Thomas Herrmann, Chief Executive Officer, Herrmann Ultraschalttechnik GmbH & Co. KG, Karlsbad, Ms. Elke Manjet, Global Head of Talent Acquisition and Attraction, SAP SE Walldorf, and Prof. Dr. Johann Marius Zöllner, Scientific Director and Director of Technical-Cognitive Assistance Systems (TKS) at the FZI Research Center for Information Technology in Karlsruhe and Professor of Applied Technical-Cognitive Systems at the Institute of Applied Informatics and Formal Description Methods at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
The following members have been members for several years: Ms. Margareta Barth (2016), former President of the Baden-Württemberg State Institute for the Environment, Measurements and Nature Conservation, Mr. Wolfgang Grenke (2016), Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of GRENKE AG and President of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce Karlsruhe, Prof. Dr. Oliver Kraft (2016), Vice President for Research at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Dr. Carola Richter (2018), President Regional Division South & East Asia, ASEAN and Australia & New Zealand, BASF East Asia, Hong Kong, and Univ. Prof. Dr. Marion Weissenberger-Eibl (2016), Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI and holder of the Chair for Innovation and Technology Management at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
In its first meeting, the new university council elected Prof. Dr. Marion Weissenberger-Eibl as chairperson, Wolfgang Grenke as 1st deputy chairperson and Dr. Carola Richter as 2nd deputy chairperson. This is not only the first time in the history of the university that a woman has been elected as chairperson of the University Council, but also the first time that the majority of members are female.
The most important tasks of the University Council are the adoption of resolutions on the structural and development planning of the University, the supervision of the Rectorate and the adoption of resolutions on the draft budget and the economic plan respectively.
